SLC Resident Lisa Wins Blue Ribbon for Chelsea Fair Entry
Several St. Louis Center residents enjoy working on crafts as a hobby to pass their time while they’re not at work or in school. Resident Lisa Robert’s favorite hobby is making jewelry, and this year she was encouraged to enter her work into competition at the Chelsea Community Fair. To Lisa’s surprise and delight, she won a 1st place blue ribbon for her entry, which was a pendant necklace made of beads with a matching bracelet. Once again, Lisa shed tears of happiness upon winning her prize.

Tocco Family Picnic
For many years now, Jack Tocco and his family and friends, have visited St. Louis Center during the month of August to treat our residents to some great food, and to help break up the “Dog Days of Summer.” This year, the “Tocco Family Picnic” took place on Sunday August 22, 2010, and our residents enjoyed large quantities of pizza, hot dogs, chicken tenders, potato chips, bread sticks, and soft drinks. Joe and Zoja Bojovich came to present a generous check from the “Joe’s Top Dog” golf outing from July 25th and Rosie the Clown was on hand for face painting. All in all, the residents were well cared for on this special day, in more ways than one. view more photos

Chelsea Knights Host Summer Picnic
For the third consecutive year, members of Fr. Guanella Council #3092 of the Chelsea Knights of Columbus extended their hearts to our residents by holding a Barbeque and Kick Ball game at the end of August. Led by District Deputy Tom Turek and wife Colleen, the local Knights visited St. Louis Center on Thursday August 26th to grill hot dogs and hamburgers, and provided salads and desserts. After dinner, the Knights and residents shared in a fun game of kick-ball and enjoyed each other’s company. view more photos

Dad & Lad Golf Outing
One of the most significant events of the summer in support of St. Louis Center is called the Dad and Lad Golf Outing, and this year's event was held on August 11th. This outing, sponsored by members of the italian-American community from the "East Side" of Detroit provides an opportunity for fathers to teach their sons the importance of charity and what it means to give to others when you, yourself, have been blessed. The principle benefactors of this outing include Mike
Chirco, Joe Maniaci, Sam Cottone, and members of the Tocco family. This outing is now in its thirteenth year, and we are grateful for the continued support of these wonderful friends. view more photos

Residents Challenged in Kickball
The St. Andrew’s Edge Youth Group of Saline came to the St. Louis Center August 12th to play a friendly game of kickball with the residents. The young people were such a good example for the residents, helping them to follow the rules and waiting patiently for their turn. After the game, the Youth Group served dinner to the residents in the gym.

Detroit Tiger’s Baseball
Twenty-five residents of St. Louis Center were treated to a Tiger Baseball Game in Detroit by supporters and friends from the MassMutual Financial Group located in Southfield, MI and Maumee, Ohio. Our residents, who are huge Tiger fans, saw them take a tough loss to a fine Tampa Bay Rays team. More importantly however, were the relationships built with our new friends from MassMutual. We thank General Agent Barb Gill and Field Agent Daniel Johnson, (a Chelsea High graduate), for their generosity in treating our residents to another ball game this summer.

Kiwanis Aktion Club
The Kiwanis Clubs of Chelsea and Manchester created an "Aktion Club" at St. Louis Center on Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Members from both communities were on hand to launch the start of the club, and to help the members elect their first officers.
The newly elected leadership includes Julian Early-Presidant, Stanley Butler-Vice President, Lee Booth-Treasurer and Lisa Roberts-Secretary. Their first organized activity was in assisting at the Chelsea Sights and Sounds event on August 5th, and they are planning two additional projects in September. They will be stuffing dolls for the sick children at Mott Children's Hospital at their next meeting and will be sponsoring a "Fun Run" on Wednesday, September 15th to benefit Faith-in-Action in Chelsea.

July Summer Programs a Hit at SLC
This year at St. Louis Center, Program Director Rick Visel and Training Coordinator Christine Stehlik responded to the challenge of keeping residents busy during the summer by designing programs with specific goals and objectives that would also be fun and entertaining. The special events that Stehlik plans actually have a purpose attached. The Fishing Derby was a leisure activity, and the Whiffle Ball World Series was a recreational/physical event. Water Wars was a social event, and Do You Think You Can Dance was to enhance their creativity. Aside from the positive physical/psychological advantages the resident get from creative play time, the most important thing to the residents, is that they’re just, “having fun.”
